CdM’s Kendall Kipp becomes first Surf League girls’ volleyball MVP

Kendall Kipp led the Corona del Mar High girls’ volleyball team to an undefeated Surf League title, earning her the league MVP award.

Kipp, a 6-foot-4 outside hitter who signed with Stanford, had 505 kills on .333 hitting, adding 179 digs, 50 blocks and 31 service aces.

Senior middle blocker Karly Recker and junior outside hitter Nikki Senske also made the first team for the Sea Kings. After winning the inaugural league, CdM (25-13, 6-0 in league) advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs, where they lost a five-set match at Trabuco Hills.

Edison senior setter Aly Fullbright and senior middle blocker Taylor Torchia received first-team honors, as did Huntington Beach junior middle blocker Xolani Hodel and junior libero Mia Christensen.

For the season, Recker had 141 kills, 56 blocks and 21 aces. Senske provided 231 kills, 141 digs, 46 aces and 19 blocks. The two helped CdM receive a berth into the CIF State Southern California Regional Division I tournament, where the Sea Kings lost in five sets at Carlsbad La Costa Canyon in the first round.

A fierce battle played out behind the Sea Kings, with Edison, Huntington Beach and Los Alamitos finishing in a three-way tie for second in the league at 2-4.

Fullbright amassed 610 assists to go with 167 digs and 30 aces. Torchia had 189 kills, 52 digs, 51 blocks and 24 aces.

Edison (17-15) saw its season end at Lakewood St. Joseph with a five-set loss in the second round of the Division 2 playoffs.

Hodel had 172 kills, 170 digs and 68 blocks, while Christensen had 390 digs, 40 assists and 28 aces.

Huntington Beach (14-13) dropped its second-round match at Dana Hills in the Division 2 playoffs. The Dolphins defeated the Oilers 25-19, 25-10, 22-25, 25-23.

The second team included CdM sophomore opposite Molly Joyce and sophomore setter Bella Pouliot, Edison senior libero Haley Chun, senior outside hitter Samantha Schofield and junior setter Emily Sparks, and Huntington Beach sophomore outside hitter Sabrina Phinizy and junior setter Jaclyn Sanchez.
