Youth football sign-ups available

Huntington Beach Pop Warner Football — home of the 2009 Weson Champion Jr Pee Wee football teams, nationally ranked Advanced Midget cheer and Jamz Champion Pee Wee Cheer teams — is holding sign-ups for the 2010 season Saturday at the Edison High football field. In-person registration will be taken between 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Online registration is currently being taken at www.hbpwf.org.

If registering online, player and parents will need to attend an in-person registration day to provide proof of residency and determine size and weight of a player for team placement. Huntington Beach Pop Warner Football now has teams playing at both Edison and Marina High. Players from other cities who do not have a Pop Warner program in their city, are welcome to join Huntington Beach Pop Warner.

Weinberg signs with Kalamazoo

Aric Weinberg of Huntington Beach has signed a contract with the Kalamazoo Kings of the Frontier League. Weinberg, 24, played his first professional year of baseball last season with the Alexandria Aces of the Continental Baseball League.

The left-handed hitting outfielder from Marina High and Golden West College helped lead the Aces to the CBL championship and was the CBL’s starting left fielder in the division’s All-Star Game. Weinberg led the Aces in runs batted in, batting average with runners in scoring position and walks. He was third in home runs and runs scored and was among the team leaders in on-base percentage and slugging.
