High School Volleyball: It’s All-Stars’ night

Corona del Mar High and Newport Harbor are well represented on the Orange County Volleyball All-Star teams that will play Friday at Newport Harbor.

The girls’ match starts at 6 p.m. and the boys play at 7:30 p.m. in the 33rd annual event.

The girls’ north roster features Newport Harbor seniors Katey Thompson (UC Santa Barbara), Kirby Burnham (USC), Kelly Heenan (UCSB) and Mackenzi Campbell (Montana State). The quartet helped lead the Sailors to a CIF State Division I championship, a CIF Southern Section Division I-AA title and a share of the Sunset League crown.

CdM seniors Madie Smith (UCLA), Sydney Brombal (Princeton) and Amanda Nickel (Brown) are on the girls’ south roster. They helped the Sea Kings to the Pacific Coast League title and appearances in the CIF State Division II Southern California Regional final and the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA championship match. CdM head man Darryl Gan is one of two coaches for the girls’ south team.

The boys’ south roster includes CdM seniors Weston Nielsen (UCSB) and Joey Booth (USC). The tandem was key in leading the Sea Kings to a PCL title and to the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs.

Newport Harbor’s Jackson Carmack (UCLA), Will Connelly (USC) and Connor Curry (Penn State) are on the boys’ north roster. The senior trio helped the Sailors reach the CIF Southern Section Division I quarterfinals.
