Rivals unite for day

The Battle for the Bell on the gridiron turns into the Battle of the Brush in the park.

Football players from rival high schools, Costa Mesa and Estancia, will join forces in cleaning up Canyon Park on Saturday. Players will rake leaves, trim the grass, and pick weeds and pick up trash alongside their coaches, Estancia’s Mike Bargas and Costa Mesa’s Jeremy Osso, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The programs are teaming up with the city of Costa Mesa, which will provide the tools and help with trash disposal. Estancia booster president Steve Mensinger and Costa Mesa booster president Frank Albers said their respective programs want to give back to the community.

The Eagles lead the intense rivalry in football with a 24-18-1 record. As for which school has the best cleanup crew, go to the park on 970 Arbor St. on Saturday to find out.

Sixth annual ‘Bub-A-Que’ event

The Brian Kapko Foundation will have its sixth annual “Bub-A-Que” before the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim game against the Colorado Rockies on June 26.

The barbeque event remembers Brian “Bubba” Kapko, a former Estancia High football player, and raises money for the community. Kapko, a 2004 Estancia graduate, was killed in a car accident in 2005.

The tailgate is scheduled to start at 3 p.m., three hours before the baseball game. The tailgate will take place near the “Big A” sign in the stadium’s parking lot.

A $40 donation will include one ticket to the game, a “Bub-A-Que” 2010 commemorative T-shirt, food and drinks.
