AZUSA — Senior Andrew Casco lofted a 28-yard chip over the goalkeeper, hitting the back of the net for the game-winner as time expired in the No. 5-ranked Lions’ Golden State Athletic Conference road win over No. 12 Azusa Pacific Saturday.

Vanguard (6-0-1, 1-0 in conference) battled back from a 2-0 first-half deficit, cutting the lead to 2-1 in the 44th minute on a Tomislav Colic penalty kick. Kevin Cornwall tied the game at 2-2 in the 87th minute, and Casco had the ball at his feet in the closing seconds after back-to-back Vanguard corner kicks in the final minute of regulation.

CROSS COUNTRY

Stanford Invitational

STANFORD — The UC Irvine women’s cross country team placed 11th and the men’s team finished 12th at the 37th annual meet Saturday.

UCI’s women had 309 points in the 24-team meet. Stanford won the title with 41 points, California was second with 86 and Long Beach State third with 127.

Stanford’s Kathy Kroeger finished first in the 6,000-meter race with a time of 20 minutes, 6 seconds at the Stanford Golf Course.

Junior Katherine Nielsen led UCI with a 46th-place finish of 22:07 and Colleen Lillig was 47th in 22:08. Melissa Mead placed 80th with a time of 22:48 in the field of 212 runners.

On the men’s side, the Anteaters totaled 329 points in the 26-team field. The host Cardinal won the meet with 31 points, Arkansas was second and Northern Arizona third.

David McNeil of Northern Arizona won the 8,000-meter race in 23:18.

UCI senior Colin Hacker was 46th in the 231-runner field with a time of 24:48. Brett Matejka was 69th in 25:09 and Steven Melena 82nd in 25:17.

AZUSA — Danielle Dintino scored for the No. 8-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game against top-ranked APU Saturday.

Dintino scored the equalizer in the 73rd minute off an assist from Gabriela Valles for Vanguard (6-1-2, 0-0-1 in conference).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Santa Barbara def. UC Irvine

IRVINE — Kari Pestolesi and Larissa Nordyke had 10 kills each for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference match Saturday.

Former Newport Harbor High standouts Katey Thompson (six kills) and Kelly Heenan (team-high 16 digs) helped the Gauchos win, 25-20, 25-22, 25-20.

Mary Carls had 23 assists for UCI (4-10, 0-2 in conference).

Pestolesi had 20 kills Friday, when Cal Poly San Luis Obispo beat the Anteaters, 23-25, 22-25, 26-24, 25-23, 15-10.

COSTA MESA — Lisa Morgan had 21 kills for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday.

No. 7-ranked APU won, 25-21, 20-25, 26-24, 23-25, 16-14.

Jamie Heenan had 15 kills and 13 digs, while Ariel Strickler had 28 digs for Vanguard (10-5, 2-4 in conference).
