Edison wins tourney crown

The Edison High boys’ water polo team won a team championship and an all-you-can eat feast Saturday by winning the in the inaugural Newport Rib Co. Classic at Costa Mesa High’s new pool.

The Chargers defeated University, 11-5, in the semifinals and in the title game beat arch-rival and Sunset League foe Fountain Valley, 10-9, in sudden death overtime.

Junior Brent Bazzell scored with 10 seconds remaining in the first overtime on a shot that hit the inside of both posts to lift Edison to the title. Senior goalie John Mroch had three of his 11 saves in overtime.

By winning the 16-team tournament, the Chargers were treated to all-they-could eat rib feast outside the pool deck after the title game, Edison Coach Diggy Riley said.

The boys played a really good University team in the semis and put together one of their most complete games of the year on both ends of the pool,” Riley said. “Our press defense was the key to our success as it really fueled our counter attack. Beating Fountain Valley, while nice, really means nothing because it wasn’t in league. Neither of the teams wanted to show too much. Our game on Nov. 3 will decide who advances to the postseason in CIF this year.

“It was pretty exciting, however, to watch the shot, a skip-double-bar-in by Brent Bazzell, become the game winner. That was one incredible shot that you don’t see happen too often and when you do, there are always ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ that follow.”

Girls’ Golf

Marina moved to 9-0 in the Sunset League following a 219-232 victory over visiting Los Alamitos at Meadowlark Golf Course in Huntington Beach. Senior Taylor Weber shot a 41, sophomore Haley Wian a 42 followed by Halle Young (44), Mackenzie McCollum (45) and Kayla Pacot (47) for the Vikings who improved to 13-4 overall..The medalist was Esther Lee of Los Alamitos with a one-under par score of 35.

Cross-Country

Marina’s Richie Soto ran a 14:56 to finish in eighth-place and the Vikings, as team, had 201 points to finish fifth in the Sweepstakes standings of the Orange County Championships Saturday at Irvine Regional Park. Huntington Beach finished third behind first-place St. Margaret’s and second-place Santiago/Garden Grove in the Division 3 boys’ standings. In the girls’ Division 3 race, Huntington freshman Amanda Honn ran 18:33 to earn a third-place individual finish.

Field Hockey

Huntington Beach and Newport Harbor once again played a close, tough battle that went to the wire.

This time, the Sunset League encounter went the Sailors’ way as they scored a 1-0 victory Oct. 14 at Huntington Beach. The only goal of the match was posted at the 26:26 mark of the second period when Emily Mitchell scored off a redirect shot from Stephanie Storch.

The teams met twice earlier this month at the Orange County Field Hockey Assn. Invitational at Marina and both posted 1-0 victories against each other. Huntington also had posted a 1-0 league win over the Sailors on Sept. 28.

Both teams shared first-place entering the week with 4-1 records.

In previous league play, Huntington shut out host Marina, 4-0. Seven minutes into the first period, Huntington senior defender Ashlyn Pooler sent a pass inside the top of the circle to sophomore forward Kayla Wigney who then sent a long, hard shot to senior outside midfielder Corinne Clegg who scored.

With 12:24 on the clock in the first period, Wigney crossed another hard shot to the goal from the right side of the field that was blocked by Marina goalie Madison Mulcahey but Huntington senior forward Jessica Van Arsdale was there to take the rebound for the second goal. Thirteen minutes into the second period, junior center midfielder Lindsey Walter moved the ball into the top of the circle and powered a shot down the center of the circle where Van Arsdale took scoring honors again.

The Oilers scored their final goal with 7:30 left in the second period when sophomore outside midfielder Abby Masters scored off a Wigney pass. The Huntington offense got off several shots on goal the remainder of the game but couldn’t score again as Mulcahey came up with eight saves for the game.
