Chargers earn Mustang Cup hardware

The Edison boys’ soccer team, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, won the Trabuco Hills Mustang Cup on Dec. 29, blanking Tesoro, 2-0, in the tournament final. The Chargers also scored tournament wins over La Serna (7-0), Laguna Hills (2-1), Beckman (7-0) and Burroughs (8-0).

A balanced Edison offense was led by Bajj Chela, who scored six goals in five games. Tyler Bigenho scored five goals, Jacob Rushing had four goals, Jacob Arenado, Faris Barudi and Sean Thompson each scored twice and Mitchell Alvarez, Mikey McClymonds-Nguyen, Matt Steinhaus and Trevor Verone all scored once.

Goalies Scott Campbell and Kevin Piscopo combined to surrender just one goal in the tournament. Edison, which was 13-0 heading into its Sunset League opener Wednesday against Marina, has outscored its opponents, 58-3.

Katin Pro-Am Team Challenge starts Friday

With favorable conditions predicted for the weekend, the Katin Pro-Am Team Challenge has been scheduled to run Friday and Saturday at the Huntington Beach Pier. The competition, which as of Tuesday had 20 confirmed teams for the event, begins at 8 a.m. both days. Opening heats will be run Friday. The completion of Round 2 and the quarterfinals, semifinals and final will be Saturday.

Among the competitors are three-time ASP World Champion Tom Curren (Team Rip Curl), former world champion Sunny Garcia (17th Street/Mauli Ola Foundation), last year’s Katin champion Chris Waring (Dragon), plus several other former World Tour surfers. Fountain Valley LL registration is Saturday

Fountain Valley Little League is holding three more registration session this month for its 2010 season, beginning with a 9 a.m. to noon session Saturday at the league snack bar (Mile Square Park). The final two session, Jan. 15 and Jan. 22, are also from 9 a.m. to noon at the snack bar and coincide with tryouts. Players ages 9 and up are eligible to tryout. Players age 8 have the option of also trying out.
