Briefs: Trio named All-Americans

UC Irvine seniors Tom Kruip and Griffin Lerman were named second-team All-American and senior Doug Lindsey was named to the third team by the Assn. of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches.

Kruip, who scored 37 goals for the ‘Eaters this past season, earned third-team laurels as a junior.

Lerman scored 46 goals in 2010 when he was also named first-team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Lindsey scored 40 goals for UCI, which finished 18-8 and were No. 5 in the final national rankings.

It was the fourth time in the last six years that UC Irvine has finished in the top five.

Senior twins Brandon Johnson and Matt Johnson received honorable mention.

Brandon Johnson, who led the ‘Eaters with 48 goals, twice earned second-team All-American recognition in his career.

Matt Johnson, a goalie, started all 26 games and had 191 saves.

UCI draws Nevada

The UC Irvine men’s basketball team will play at Nevada on Feb. 19 as part of the 2011 BracketBusters series.

The game will be at 2:05 p.m. at Lawlor Events Center in Reno.

UCI (10-12, 3-5 in the Big West Conference) visits Cal State Fullerton tonight at 7. The Anteaters are on the road Sautrday at Cal State Northridge.

Nevada was 8-13, 5-3 in the Western Athletic Conference, entering the week.

Nevada competed in the Big West from 1992 to 2000 before joining the WAC.

Nevada leads the series with UCI, 12-5, and has won the last six meetings, including 77-68 at the Anaheim Convention Center Nov. 13, 2007, the teams’ last meeting.

Good help for Eagles

Costa Mesa Pop Warner raised $4,500 in donations and help from Skosh Monahan’s Steakhouse & Irish Pub Monday night.

Skosh Monahan’s donated 20% of all sales to the local youth football program.

The Costa Mesa Eagles urged the public to show up and also sold raffle tickets for many prizes. Former USC player Sam “Bam” Cunningham was also in attendance.
