High School Roundup: Sailors clinch first playoff berth

NEWPORT BEACH — Despite the loss, the Sailors clinched at least a third-place finish in the Sunset League and what is believed to be their first CIF Southern Section Division I playoff berth.

Megan Khademi scored for the Tars in the Sunset League game Thursday. Josie Jogwe had the assist for Newport Harbor (6-10-3, 5-3 in league). Los Alamitos beat Marina to help the Sailors clinch at least third in league.

Estancia 2, Saddleback 0

SANTA ANA — Jackie Freiberger and Isela Garcia scored a goal each for the Eagles in the Orange Coast League game Thursday.

Jessica Lyons had an assist, while goalie Ferny Perez had two saves for Estancia (12-4-3, 6-1-1 in league), which moved into a first-place tie in league with Calvary Chapel after it tied with Costa Mesa.

Estancia plays host to Calvary Chapel Monday at 4:45 p.m. at Jim Scott Stadium. The Mustangs will play host to Estancia Wednesday at 4:45 p.m.

University 1, Corona del Mar 0

IRVINE — Senior goalie Lindsey Luke had six saves for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game Thursday.

University scored in the sixth minute. CdM (13-3-4, 7-1-1) had at least 10 shots on goal, Coach Bryan Middleton said. The Sea Kings clinched the PCL title on Tuesday.

Irvine Southern California Championships

CORONA DEL MAR — Newport Harbor High earned wins over Cabrillo of Lompoc, 18-0, and El Toro, 6-4, to advance to today’s quarterfinals at Corona del Mar High.

The No. 4-seeded Sailors (18-4) will play against rival CdM tonight at 6 in the Sea Kings’ pool.

Maddy McLaren scored four goals in the first-round win. Goalie Sarah Wilkey made 11 saves against El Toro, while Kailyn Obenauer, Presley Pender and Elissia Schilling scored two goals each.

Irvine Southern California Championships

CORONA DEL MAR — Corona del Mar High defeated Esperanza, 14-2, and Agoura, 12-9, to advance to today’s quarterfinals.

Ally McCormick scored six goals for the Sea Kings (16-5) against Agoura. Goalie Alex Musselman made 15 saves and CdM moved on, despite Pippa Saunders and Lauren Marks both fouling out.

Diana Murphy scored four goals against Esperanza, and Saunders had three.

The No. 5-seeded Sea Kings will play Back Bay rival Newport Harbor in a tournament quarterfinal today at 6 p.m., also at CdM.

Estancia 15, Jordan 9

LONG BEACH — Kylie Carpenter and Ilene Umanksy scored seven goals each for the Eagles in the nonleague game Thursday.

Goalie Alexis Paul had 16 saves for Estancia (10-13), which will play host to rival Costa Mesa Wednesday at 3 p.m.
