UC Irvine 81, Cal State Fullerton 77

IRVINE — Mikah Maly-Karros and Jade Smith-Williams scored 29 and 26 points, respectively for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Thursday.

Smith-Williams also had a career-high 10 assists and Maly-Karros led UCI (13-8, 5-4 in conference) with eight rebounds.

Maly-Karros finished 12 of 18 from the field,w hile Smith Willaims hit three of five from three-point range and connected on 13 of her 14 free-throw attempts.

Cal State Fullerton is 8-15, 4-6.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Matt Mooningham went four for five for the Pirates in their nonconference season opener Thursday.

Chris Carlson went two for three with three runs batted in and Brian Garza went two for four with a double for OCC (1-0).

MEN’S TENNIS

UCLA 4, UC Irvine 3

LOS ANGELES — Chris Kearney and Fabian Matthews won in singles for the No. 52-ranked Anteaters, who nearly upset the No. 6-ranked Bruins Thursday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

UCLA (5-0) held on for the nonconference win after No. 64-ranked Maxime Tabatruong defeated Sam Gould, 6-2, 3-6, 3-6 at No. 3 singles.

UC Irvine (1-4) won two out of three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead heading into singles.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Pepperdine 6, UC Irvine 1

MALIBU — Kristina Smith won at No. 3 singles for the Anteaters in the nonconference match at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center Thursday.

Smith beat Anamika Bhargava, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6). UCI dropped to 0-2.
