HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High seniors Ryan Cerrato and Bradley Beaudette captured Sunset League individual titles at the league finals at Edison High Saturday.
Cerrato improved to 30-8, winning two matches on his way to becoming the champion in the 171-pound division. He defeated Mason Kumashiro of Los Alamitos in the final, 19-10.
Beaudette (28-8) also won twice to become the 189-pound champion. He scored a 9-3 victory over Los Alamitos' Noah Kessenich in the final.
Sailors Coach Dominic Bulone said it is the first time Newport Harbor has had two league champions in his 12 years as coach.
The Sailors, who finished fifth as a team, have five CIF Southern Section qualifiers and two alternates.
Sophomore David Wadleigh (119-pound division), sophomore Larson Harley (125) and senior Jesus Sotelo (130) each earned third-place finishes. The trio, along with Cerrato and Beaudette, advances to the CIF Southern Section Inland Division Championships at Roosevelt High in Corona Feb. 18 and 19.
Newport Harbor junior Ben Nordstrom (152) and senior Jeff Bowler (145) both finished fourth and are alternates for the CIF section meet.
