Big fourth leads to win for Lady Breakers

The Laguna Beach Lady Breakers girls’ Division 1 (7th-grade) team ran its season win streak to nine Sunday by rallying for a 42-27 victory over the Rancho Santa Margarita Lakers.

Paced by Alexandra Lewis’ 20 points, the Lady Breakers got off to a sluggish start and trailed by six points in the third quarter but outscored the Lakers, 27-6, in the final quarter to pull away.

Jacky Cenan and Katelyn Carballo each scored nine points for the Lady Breakers, who used a full-court press on defense that wore down the Lakers and led to several steals and fast-break opportunities.

Laguna wraps up its regular-season schedule Saturday. A win would give the Lady Breakers a 10-0 record heading into the playoffs.

Girls’ Division 3

The Laguna Beach girls’ Division 3 (3rd/4th grade) team put on an impressive defensive display Saturday and came away with a 34-3 victory over visiting San Clemente at the old gym on the Laguna Beach High campus.

Laguna’s aggressive defense was led by Izzy Meekma, Avalon Brice and Rosie Lawler and didn’t allow San Clemente a basket.

San Clemente’s three points came from the free-throw line.

Laguna’s offense was led by Quinn Winter, who had nine points. Piper Naess scored seven points and Evie Lapin, Molly Cohn and Veronica Guerinot each scored four points. Point guards Hallie Carballo and Emmalisa Randrup controlled the offense.

Laguna is now 7-1 with two games remaining on its regular-season schedule.
