Evans wins pole vault at Mt. Carmel Invitational

Sailors’ junior Sophie Evans cleared 9 feet, 10 inches to win the girls’ Division II title in the pole vault at the Mt. Carmel Invitational at Mt. Carmel High in San Diego Saturday.

Senior Mark Sakioka tied for second place in the boys’ Division I pole vault, clearing 15-2. Max Van Bergh set a personal best with a 14-2.

Newport Harbor’s Titus Hasson won his heat in the 100 meters in 11.2 seconds at the Laguna Hills Invitational. He finished third overall in the 200 at 22.49. Senior JB Salem took second in the shot put with a mark of 54-2.

Newport Harbor sophomore Katherine Maddox won her heat in the 800 in 2:29.67 at the Meet of Champions Distance Classic at Azusa Pacific University. Sophomore Vania Agama won her heat in the 800 in 2:48.48. Freshman Ashley Ima won her heat in the 1,600 in 5:43.61

Sophomore Paige Tennison was second in the girls’ 800 in 2:29.16, and seventh in the 1,600 in 5:17.26 for the Sailors’ strongest double performance of the day.

Austin Little won his heat in the 800 in 2:05.80 and junior Jake Barber took first in his heat in the 3,200 in 9:39.33.

SOFTBALL

Whittier Tournament

WHITTIER — Corona del Mar High lost to Bellflower, 4-1, but beat St. Mathias, 9-3, Saturday.

Delaney Owen pitched 14 innings (two complete games) giving up two earned runs – one in each game. Owen singled in two runs to break up a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning against St. Mathias.

Freshman Amanda Penna, who is being evaluated for an elbow injury, went three for six with three runs batted in and four runs scored. Penna had a two-run home run for for CdM (3-6).

Owen finished one for two with four walks and a sacrifice.
