College Roundup: Anteaters claim opener

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Sophomore forward Natalie Ledezma, a transfer from UCLA, had a goal and an assist to lead UC Irvine to a 2-1 season-opening win over Texas-San Antonio in the opener of the Texas A&M Invitational on Friday.

Ledezma scored in the ninth minute on an assist from Jordan Bruce and the Anteaters (1-0) held that lead at halftime.

The Roadrunners (0-1) tied the score in the 53rd minute, but senior forward Lexi Kopf converted a Ledezma assist into the game-winner in the 74th minute.

Freshman Jennifer Randazzo had six saves for UCI, ranked No. 17 by the National Soccer Coaches Assn. of America.

The Anteaters face No. 11-ranked Texas A&M on Sunday.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Concordia (Ore.) def. Vanguard

AZUSA — Kristen Markowitz had 15 kills and Jamie Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product, added 13 for the Lions in the Cougar Classic on Friday at Azusa Pacific University.

Alexandra Leja had 33 assists and Lisa Morgan had 11 digs for the Lions.

Vanguard, which lost to Oklahoma Baptist and defeated Eastern Oregon on the opening day Thursday, is 1-2.
