Breakers have nice showing at preseason tournament

The Laguna Beach High girls’ volleyball team tuned up for the start of its 2011 season by placing second at the preseason Foothill Queens Court Volleyball Tournament. The Breakers fell in the finals to Dos Pueblos, 25-19, 25-23. They reached the final by defeating last year’s tournament winner, Edison, in the semifinals, 32-30, 25-21.

Laguna went 6-2 in the tournament that ran Aug. 27-28 at the American Sports Center in Anaheim.

The girls’ volleyball team is one of three Laguna squads to open its season in the coming week. On Friday, the boys’ water polo team hosts Villa Park and the football team is home to Webb School of Claremont. The boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams run for the first time Saturday at the Mt. SAC Fastback Shootout. The girls’ tennis team plays its third match of the season on Tuesday at Corona del Mar.

Tennis sessions offered

A Junior Team Tennis Skills Check and Orientation will be held Saturday at Alta Laguna Park in Laguna Beach. Times for each division are as follows: 10-and-under (noon); 12U (1:30 p.m.); 14U (3 p.m.).

Junior Tennis Training at Alta Laguna Park begins Wednesday. Training is for tournament level and high school players focusing on advanced shot making and shot selection, strategy and match toughness. The cost is $196 for six sessions. Pee Wee, Junior and Teens classes for beginning to Intermediate players of all ages are Wednesday and Sept. 16.

Players will work on developing strokes, footwork and point play. Adult Cardio Tennis starts Monday at the Laguna Beach High tennis courts. The one-hour cardio sessions are from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. each Monday and focuses on drills and games. The cost is $126 for six workouts.

Club volleyball tryouts are Tuesday

Main Beach Volleyball Club will be holding open tryouts for boys ages 13 to 18 on Tuesday at Saddleback College (28000 Marguerite Parkway, Mission Viejo). Tryouts run from 7 to 9 p.m. For more information, email mainbeachvbc@cox.net.
