Edison opens with impressive win

The Edison boys' water polo team started its season Sept. 7 in dramatic fashion by scoring an 11-10 overtime win over Capistrano Valley at the Ocean View High pool.

Sophomore Justin Harrison led the Chargers with four goals. Senior Tony Morelli scored three goals, sophomore Troy Oates two goals and senior Brent Bazzell and freshman Dan Estrella both scored once. Senior Nate Sfreddo registered eight saves.

"This win over Capo was a great start for us as a team," Edison Coach Diggy Riley said. "Capo had nearly upset Foothill the day before, so we knew they were going to be tough. After a shaky start our boys settled down, especially on the defensive end. Our center defenders, Kyle Spreeman and Dan Estrella, did exceptional jobs, especially in the second half and overtime."

Capistrano Valley was ranked seventh in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 poll at the time of the match.

"We have been training very hard the past three weeks and our intense conditioning really paid off," Riley said. "Both Coach (Tim) Floyd and I have been really stressing playing as a team not only in games but in practice, too. The concept of really coming together as a single unit is critical to our success. In addition, we have been really trying to get the boys to shut out all distractions at practice and pay attention to details."

Edison battles Woodbridge at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at the Woollett Center in Irvine.

Several local teams were ranked in this week's CIF Southern Section polls.

In girls' volleyball, Edison and Huntington Beach grace the Division 1-AA poll, with the Chargers in at No. 4 and the Oilers at No. 10. Los Alamitos, a Sunset League rival of both teams, is ranked No. 1 for the second straight week. Ocean View is No. 2 in the Division 4-AA poll, behind top-ranked St. Margaret's. Also in the poll is Brethren Christian at No. 6.

Both Huntington Beach and Ocean View are ranked in boys' volleyball, with the Oilers at No. 4 in Division 1 and the Seahawks at No. 7 in Division 7.

In other polls, Edison was listed as others in the Pac-5 Division football rankings.
