High School Roundup: Newport opens league with win


Newport Harbor 6, Fountain Valley 3

NEWPORT BEACH — Sophie Evans, Allie Pantoskey and Taury Hlinka scored two assists each for the Sailors in the Sunset League opener Tuesday at Davidson Field.

Courtney McIntosh and Jill Messersmith had two assists each for Newport Harbor (7-2-2), which plays host to Huntington Beach Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.



Newport Harbor 12, Woodbridge 6

IRVINE — Freshman Annie Radeva won two of her No. 3 singles' sets in the Sailors nonleague match Tuesday.

Mindy Wheeler and Megan Bathen won their first two sets in No. 2 doubles before being subbed out for Newport Harbor (6-1), ranked No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division II poll.

The Sailors open Sunset League at Edison on Thursday at 3 p.m.


Costa Mesa 10, Godinez 8

COSTA MESA — Seniors Jacky Dang and Lisa Vu only dropped one game in No. 1 doubles play in the Mustangs' season opener Tuesday.

Costa Mesa resumes Orange Coast League play at Saddleback on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.



Estancia 250, Laguna Beach 252

COSTA MESA — Junior Cassie Stevenson shot a four-over-par 39 to earn medalist honors in the Eagles' Orange Coast League match at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club's Mesa Linda Course on Tuesday.

Frankie Thorpe recorded a 49 for Estancia (3-10, 3-1 in league).


Newport Harbor 253, Huntington Beach 259

NEWPORT BEACH — Charlotte Skjonsby earned medalist honors after shooting a five-over-par 41 for the Sailors in the Sunset League match Tuesday at Big Canyon Country Club.

Tara Hanna (49), Lauren Willard (49), Kate Lamas (51), Amelia Thomas (63) also scored for Newport Harbor (6-4, 2-2 in league).

The Sailors play against Dana Hills Wednesday at Santa Ana Country Club.



Laguna Beach def. Estancia

LAGUNA BEACH — The Eagles lost their Orange Coast League opener, 25-10, 25-12, 25-17, Tuesday.

Estancia is 3-7, 0-1 in league.
