SEAL BEACH — Newport Harbor High senior Mindy Wheeler and junior Megan Bathen won the league doubles title Monday, defeating a duo from Los Alamitos, 3-6, 6-4, 10-4 to pace the Sailors.
Wheeler and Bathen, seeded No. 2 after finishing runner-up last year, handled Sarah Edwards and Sofia Bott in the final after the Los Al duo had upset the top-seeded Tars duo of Christina and Robin Young.
Wheeler and Bathen finish 31-0 against Sunset League competition.
The Young sisters finished third in the doubles event.
In singles, Newport Harbor sophomore Natalie Cernius, the No. 3 seed, lost to top-seeded Sarah Stadfelt of Edison, 6-1, 6-1, in the final.
Cernius upset teammate Blake Bakkila the No. 2 seed, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8, in the semifinals.
Newport Harbor freshman Anna Radeva, who lost to Stadfelt in the semifinals, finished third when Bakkila sprained an ankle in the third-place match and retired.
