Tar Heels win Swoosh MLK crown

The Newport-Mesa All-Net fifth-grade boys' basketball team competed in last weekend's Swoosh Martin Luther King Classic in Downey and won the 11U division.

The Tar Heels defeated IE Scorpions, SCV Playmakers and Camarillo Swoosh to win the tournament last weekend.

Matt Olson led all scorers averaging 10 points per game and two rebounds per game while DJ Rodman (seven points per game and four rebounds per game) and Sam Barela (six ppg and two steals per game) helped lead the way to the wins.

Adam Flood had his best game of the season against the Scorpions with 10 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists, while Mason Melcer (four ppg) and Luke Chelf (four ppg, two spg) held the top scorers for all of the teams in check.

Johnny King was big in the championship game against the Camarillo Swoosh coming up with nine rebounds and two blocks while Ethan Barnes led the team in steals with 3.5 per game and used his stifling defense to create havoc on the court.

The Tar Heels are undefeated in the Winter season so far going 6-0 in league and 7-0 in nonleague games.
