Robinson has day to remember

The Ocean View High baseball team is starting to make its move in Golden West League circles.

Since falling to Westminster in its league opener March 16, the Seahawks have won three straight games, their latest a 21-0 shellacking over visiting Santa Ana. Both teams entered Tuesday’s game tied with Westminster for first place in the league standings.

The victory moved Ocean View to 3-1 in league and 5-6 overall.

Highlighting the one-sided win was the performance by senior Timmy Robinson, who went six for six with eight RBIs, clubbed two home runs and hit for the cycle. Seahawks Coach Shane Borowski said that Robinson set a school record for most total bases in a game with 15 — previous record was held by former major league baseball player Justin Brunette, class of 1993 — and tied a school record for RBIs in a game — tied former MLB player David Holdridge, class of 1987.

Other offensive highlights included sophomore catcher Zach Honnes going three for five and juniors Luke Fell and John Giacone both going two for two.

Ocean View outhit Santa Ana, 21-4.

“Robinson’s performance was out of this world,” Borowski said. “A day like that is special, there’s no other way to describe it. I’m really proud of all our guys, they’ve been swinging really hot bats the last couple of games. I especially like the fact that we were able to shut them (Santa Ana) out. We kept a strong defensive focus both on the mound with Jonah (Desjardin) and on the field, and that allowed our hitters to keep getting their chances.

“I have to say, although the score was a little lopsided, Santa Ana is a much improved team from last year. That was a critical game for us as both of us were 2-1 in league. I’m glad our bats showed up again.”

Desjardin got the victory by pitching six shutout innings. The senior scattered four hits, walked two batters and struck out seven. It was his first varsity win and is effort lowered his earned-run average to. 2.37, Borowski said.

“We couldn’t have done better,” Desjardin said. “Everyone was clicking, offensively, defensively, we just couldn’t miss. I like our team spirit and chemistry. We have a lot of work to do still, but we are definitely headed in the right direction.”

Ocean View previously rallied for a 9-7 league win over visiting Loara on Friday. Starter Colton Johnson threw 5 2/3 innings of “quality pitching,” Borowski said.

Ocean View trailed, 7-5, entering the bottom of the sixth but went on to score four runs to take a 9-7 lead. A two-run double off the wall by Honnes put the Seahawks in the lead.

Jared Goodman went three for four with three RBIs and Chad Hackworth went three for three with two RBIs.

Ocean View travels to Segerstrom (7-3, 1-3 league) for a 3:15 p.m. league game Thursday. On Tuesday, the Seahawks host Westminster in a key 3 p.m. clash.

Sunset League

The first full week of the Sunset League baseball season went into the books Friday, and if the first three games are any indication of what is to come, all signs point to a rip-roaring race.

One thing was certain through week No. 1: the Marina Vikings sat alone atop the standings.

Marina rode the pitching of Austin Olivas and turned a couple of seventh-inning miscues and sacrifice ground out into a pair of runs that spelled the difference in a 2-0 win at Fountain Valley.

“I’ll tell you, it’s going to be a dog fight,” Marina Coach Bob Marshall said of the race and after his team improved to 3-0 in league and 6-2 overall. “To play against a legend like Ron LaRuffa, and get a win in their yard, is big. I’m dang proud of our guys. They don’t give up and they fought to the end.”

Fountain Valley, which slipped to 1-2 in league and 7-3 overall, has lost close games in the seventh inning in two of its first three league contests. Both setbacks came on the Barons’ home turf, too.

In their Sunset League opener March 16, the Barons took a three-run lead into the top of the seventh on Huntington Beach but ended up losing, 5-4, on a grand slam.

“It was one of those games,” LaRuffa, Fountain Valley’s veteran coach, said of another close setback. “You have to tip your hat to Marina. They played well and that’s as well-pitched a game that I’ve seen. They made no mistakes and we had one that ended up hurting us.”

Olivas scattered three hits and held in check a Fountain Valley team that had scored seven runs two days earlier during a 7-2 win Wednesday at rival Edison.

“He was phenomenal,” Marshall said of the left-handed junior who ran his record to 3-0. “He was attacking throughout the entire game and kept their hitters off balance. That’s a very good team and it’s impressive that Austin held them to three hits.”

Both teams flirted with scoring in the middle innings, but the game was scoreless entering the seventh. Fountain Valley junior Monty Plattner, who also threw a strong seven innings, faced two left-handed hitters to start the seventh. He got behind leadoff hitter Jake Bauers, 3-0, but fought back to earn a full count before giving up a walk.

Tyler Mildenberg faced an 0-2 count but sent a grounder toward second base that was mishandled, resulting on runners at first and second. Grant Mayeaux then laid down a sacrifice bunt that advanced the runners.

Landon Marshall was then intentionally walked to load the bases. Bob Marshall put Justin Neese in to hit and on the first pitch he faced, the ball skipped in front of the plate, rolled to the backstop and Bauers scored from third. Two pitches later, Neese grounded out to shortstop, but Mildenberg scored from third to put Marina’s lead at 2-0.

“It’s only the first week of league, but this was big,” Bob Marshall said. “It’s good to be 3-0.”

In another Sunset League game Friday, Huntington Beach rode a one-hit, complete-game performance by senior Christian Abe to a 5-0 shutout victory over visiting Edison.

Abe continued his dominance on the mound by running his scoreless innings pitched streak to 15. He is 4-0 on the season and the win put the Oilers, ranked fourth this week in CIF Division 1, at 2-1 in league and 9-1 overall.

Brett Urabe had two hits and drove in a pair of runs, Lou Payetta had two hits and an RBI and Matt Urabe had a hit and RBI for the Oilers.

“I am glad that we bounced back the way we did,” said Huntington Coach Benji Medure, whose team suffered its first loss (2-0) of the season March 21 at Los Alamitos.

“How you deal with failure is something that we take great pride in, so to get a win today was big for us. Christian (Abe) is a great guy to have on the mound to help us bounce back. He works quickly and the defense plays well behind him. He pounds the zone and doesn’t give the offense free opportunities. They have to earn their runs. He did a good job shutting down their attack.”

Marina, Fountain Valley, Edison and Huntington Beach also played Sunset League games Wednesday, but the scores weren’t available at press time.

The Sunset League title chase continues Friday. Marina travels for a key game at Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley goes to Newport Harbor and Edison entertains Los Alamitos. All games start at 3:15 p.m.

Brethren Christian suffered a 19-1 Academy League loss Friday to Crean Lutheran. Cameron Smith singled and walked for the Warriors, slipped to 0-3 in league and 0-8 overall.

The Warriors host Sage Hill in a 3 p.m. league contest Thursday.
