Chargers, Barons fare well

Edison stormed to three big wins and Fountain Valley beat two of its first three opponents at the Woodbridge Tournament at Bill Barber Park in Irvine.

The Chargers recorded a pair of shutout victories to start the tournament, first defeating South Torrance, 6-0, before blasting Long Beach Wilson, 9-0. On Monday, they led from start to finish in polishing off Palos Verdes, 5-2. Junior Sammy Cordova tamed all three opponents in running her record to 14-2.

“I haven’t seen a pitcher yet who I would rather have in [the] circle than Sammy,” Edison Coach Josh Musselman said.

In the win over South Torrance, Cordova threw a no-hitter, striking out seven. Casey Africano went two for three with a double and two runs batted in, Megan Feuerstein went two for three with two RBIs, Mercedes O’Connor had a hit and RBI and Maddy Hickman went two for three with a double.

Later in the day, Cordova earned another shutout on a one-hit performance that included 11 strikeouts against Long Beach Wilson. Africano had a hit and drove in three runs, and O’Connor went three for four with a triple, double and two RBIs.

Fountain Valley won two games Saturday at the tournament. It edged La Habra and Thousand Oaks by 2-1 scores. On Monday, the Barons gave up a two-out, sixth-inning run to La Cañada and suffered a 1-0 defeat.

The Barons used a two-run double by Brenda Bott (two for two) in the first inning and made the runs stand in the win against Thousand Oaks.

Next up for the Barons (13-6) at the tournament is a Saturday date with Pomona Catholic.

In Golden West League play, Ocean View’s Brittany Hitchcock pitched a no-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in a 9-0 victory against Westminster on April 5. Two days earlier, Hitchcock took a perfect game into the seventh inning, where she surrendered one hit in the Seahawks’ 6-0 win over Orange. She finished with 11 strikeouts.

In the lopsided win over Westminster, Erika Jason and Anita Ortiz both had three hits and Hitchcock, Kristin Nance and Cassie Baughman each had two hits.

Jason also had three hits and Hitchcock and Nance, who homered, both had two hits in the April 3 win over Orange.

Ocean View (10-7, 2-0 in league), which is idle this week, went into its spring break on a five-game win streak. The Seahawks have outscored their last five opponents, 38-6.
