Eagles stay on fire

The Concordia University softball team broke the NAIA record for most consecutive wins (43) and won its first Golden State Athletic Conference title in 21 years after a doubleheader sweep against Biola Saturday at Concordia.

The Eagles (50-2, 14-0 in conference), ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, won, 5-3, and 7-0. Concordia, which captured its second GSAC title in school history, has not lost since Feb. 11.

The Eagles broke Shawnee State’s (Ohio) mark of 42 straight wins established during the 1996 season.

“It’s kind of surreal when you think about it,” head coach Crystal Rosenthal said in a release. “You dream about these types of things and they are really nice accomplishments. I am most proud of the conference championship, which is a really tough thing to do in this conference. I am so proud of my team and their commitment to this program.”

In the first game, Katie Cotta started for CU and threw a seven-inning no-hitter, even though she allowed three runs to score with the bases loaded in the sixth inning. Amanda Fama went two for three with two runs batted in on her two-run homer in the fifth, to go along with a double. Chanele Dresser also went two for three with one RBI. Alyssa Erickson and Bryana Simpson each had one hit and RBI, and Simpson knocked a triple to right field.

For the second time this season, Cotta tied the CU single-game strikeout record with 15. She improved to 16-0 on the season and lowered her GSAC-leading 1.29 ERA.

In the nightcap, Courtney Young pitched a complete-game one-hitter to improve to 10-0 in 2012. She struck out three and only walked two. Katie Carson was two for four with a solo homer and Amanda Fama knocked a two-run jack in the first. Jennifer Simons had one hit and three RBIs, and Dresser had two hits for the second-straight game.

On the day CU outhit Biola 17-1.

Concordia’s 50 wins mark the most in school history.

Biola dropped to 15-25 and 1-11 in conference.
