Oilers on verge of wrapping up crown

Huntington Beach and Newport Harbor are on a collision course after both recorded victories Tuesday in Sunset League boys’ volleyball play.

Huntington won its eighth league sweep and improved to 8-0 by winning, 25-15, 25-13, 25-15, at Edison. Edgar Palos had 11 kills, Brendan Sander added seven kills and three aces, Ryan DeSisto and Grant Halsey combined for 14 digs and Matt Butler and Jaxon Graf had 29 assists between them. The Oilers are 18-3 and put their win streak at 13. Edison slipped to 2-6 in league.

Huntington can win an outright Sunset championship Friday when it travels to face a Newport Harbor team that rallied Tuesday to edge Los Alamitos, 22-25, 25-16, 21-25, 25-16, 15-11. The Sailors are 7-1 in league, their only loss coming April 3 at Huntington.

Also reaching the winner’s circle Tuesday was Marina, which defeated Fountain Valley, 25-14, 20-25, 25-18, 25-22. Andrew Pearson had 26 kills and 24 digs, Logan Atkinson added 19 kills and 10 digs, and Chad McCalistar chipped in 18 digs for the Vikings, who are 3-5 in league. The Barons fell to 1-7.

In Sunset League matches Friday, Huntington swept Los Alamitos, Edison rallied to edge Fountain Valley in five games, and Marina was swept by Newport Harbor. Zach Gates and Palos had 13 and nine kills, respectively, and DeSisto 11 digs for the Oilers in their 25-21, 25-19, 25-21 win over the Griffins. Jimmy Webb had 23 kills, Nick Niemiec 14 kills, Ryan Mustafa 11 digs and Steven Roach 54 assists for the Chargers’ in their 25-20, 24-26, 23-25, 25-17, 15-12 win over the Barons.

In Golden West League play Monday, Ocean View received 27 kills, nine digs, two blocks and two aces from Adam Wills, 24 digs and four aces from Andrew Huynh, 10 digs from Kyle Langley, and 42 assists from Ralph Cabiltes in a 25-14, 25-16, 28-26 victory over Loara. The win put the Seahawks at 6-0 in league and 11-4 overall.

In a league match Friday, Wills had 13 kills, Spencer Perzanowski eight hills and Cabiltes eight digs and 25 assists in a 25-15, 25-6, 25-12 win over Santa Ana.

In addition to Huntington playing at Newport Harbor (5:45 p.m.), other Friday contests include Ocean View at Loara (4:30 p.m.), Fountain Valley hosting Los Alamitos (5:45 p.m.) and Marina traveling to face Edison (5:45 p.m.).

Track and Field

The Sunset League prelims are Friday and finals are May 3. Edison is hosting both meets at Huntington Beach High’s Sheue Field. Friday’s prelims start at 1 p.m. Edison won the girls’ and Fountain Valley took the boys’ titles during regular-season meets. Both teams went 5-0.

Swimming

The Sunset League prelims are Wednesday at Newport Harbor High. League finals are May 4.
