Chargers put it all together to advance to CIF quarterfinals

Win big and move on. That’s exactly what the Edison High softball team did Tuesday in Anaheim.

The sixth-ranked Chargers (25-4) earned a date in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 quarterfinals by blitzing host Canyon of Anaheim, 13-0, in a second-round game. They did it by racking up 19 hits and advanced to play at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at third-ranked Orange Lutheran.

Junior Sammy Cordova (24-4) threw a two-hitter, senior Mercedes O’Connor went four for five, and senior Casey Africano and junior Carissa Sherman both went three for four.

Canyon was the No. 2 team from the Century League.

“We have been leaving bases full each of the past two games, and finally today we were able to hit them in,” Edison Coach Josh Musselman said. “Great effort by Carissa Sherman and once again by Mercedes, (Maddy) Hickman, and of course, the ‘S’ (Sammy Cordova) train.”

Thursday’s quarterfinal game at Orange Lutheran marks the second time that the Lancers and Chargers have met. Earlier this year, the Lancers defeated the Chargers, 4-2, in the semifinals of the Laguna Hills Tournament on March 14. The Lancers went on to win the Trinity League title. Edison finished second in the Sunset League.

Tuesday’s win was the second shutout posted by Edison in two playoff games. The Chargers opened with a 6-0 win May 17 over Murrieta Valley (14-14, Southwestern League No. 3). O’Connor and senior Jessica Plaza both hit home runs and each had three hits to lead Edison’s 11-hit attack. Cordova (23-4) threw a complete game to chalk up another victory.

Ocean View also was looking to land a berth in Thursday’s quarterfinal round when the Seahawks played a second-round Division 4 game Tuesday at La Habra. The sixth-ranked Highlanders (Freeway League No. 1) scored the winning run with two-out in the bottom of the seventh inning to get past the ninth-ranked Seahawks, 5-4.

Ocean View fought back from an early 3-0 deficit. The Seahawks scored five runs in the top of the fifth in a rally capped by a three-run home run by sophomore Tobi Salzman. La Habra scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to tie the score, before getting the game-winning run in the seventh.

The Seahawks started postseason play May 17 and scored a 7-0 shutout win over Northview of Covina (17-10, Valle Vista League No. 2). The Seahawks were strong offensively throughout their order and Salzman and junior Erika Jason were “on fire,” Seahawks Coach Mike McLaughlan said. Salzman had three hits and three RBIs and Jason had a triple and doubled twice. Junior captain Brittany Hitchcock threw a three-hitter.

Marina rallied late in its Division 1 opener May 17 at Etiwanda, but the Vikings fell, 6-4, to the Eagles (21-6, Baseline No. 2). Sophomore Desiree Hagberg went two for two with a double and senior Sandy Simmons, who will play next year at LSU, tripled for the Vikings.

Marina, the No. 3 team from the Sunset League, closed its campaign at 16-11.
