Three tennis locals alive

Costa Mesa resident Samantha Stalder, Corona del Mar resident Alastair Hurry and Newport Beach resident Grant McCabe have advanced to their respective singles semifinals rounds at the 23rd annual The Tennis Club Junior Open Tournament.

Stalder, who will be a senior at Newport Harbor High, is the No. 3 seed in girls’ 18 singles. She defeated Sabine Ludwig of Capistrano Beach, 6-1, 6-0, in the quarterfinals and will play Vivian Lin in the semifinals at 11 a.m. Thursday at The Tennis Club.

Hurry, who attends St. Margaret’s, is the No. 3 seed in boys’ 16 singles. He outlasted No. 5-seeded Shane Cruz of Anaheim, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals and will play top-seeded Will Walker of Fullerton in a semifinal at 8 a.m. Thursday.

McCabe, the No. 4 seed in boys’ 12 singles, got past Gregory Crow of Palos Verdes, 6-2, 6-2, in a quarterfinal match Thursday. He’ll play top-seeded Julian LaFond of Irvine in a semifinal at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, also at The Tennis Club.

Local players who fell Thursday included Alec Adamson (boys’ 18s), Riley Gerdau (girls’ 16s), Bjorn Hoffmann (boys’ 16s) and Jay Phansalkar (boys’ 12s). Adamson, an incoming Corona del Mar High senior, was upset by No. 7-seeded Chao-yu Huang, 6-2, 6-1, in a boys’ 18s quarterfinal.

Doubles action got underway late Wednesday and, like the singles, continues through Friday.
