Pavlik and Kropp capture women's title at H.B. Pier

The 2012 Jose Cuervo Pro Beach Volleyball Series came to an end Sunday with the National Championships Huntington Beach Open, where Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach) and Jenny Kropp (Holly Glen) won the women's title, and John Hyden (Sherman Oaks) and Sean Scott (Redondo Beach) captured the men's crown at the Huntington Beach Pier.

Pavlik and Kropp swept Rachel Scott (Redondo Beach) and Lauren Fendrick (Hermosa Beach), 21-14, 21-18, and Hyden and Scott beat Olympians Jake Gibb (Costa Mesa) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach), 21-15, 21-12.

"Finishing off [the series] here in Huntington Beach is great," Pavlik said. "I grew up down the road in Laguna Beach, and I have family and friends here today. It's great [winning] here and that they were a part of it with me."

Ryan Doherty and Casey Patterson, both of Huntington Beach, advanced to the men's semifinals Sunday, where their title bid was ended by Hyden and Scott. Doherty and Patterson had a big day Saturday with upset wins against Rosenthal and Gibb, and Hyden and Scott.
