College Roundup: VU finishes off Westmont

Vanguard 6, Westmont 1

SANTA BARBARA — Four Westmont errors led to four unearned runs to help visiting Lions pitcher Kamakani Usui earn the victory with seven strong innings in Golden State Athletic Conference play on Wednesday.

Bryce Arroyo went two for five with one run batted in, John Collins was two for three and Thomas Mobley singled and added an RBI for the winners (15-20, 8-14 in conference).

Usui allowed six hits and one unearned run to improve to 3-4.

Clayton Voetching had two hitless, shutout innings to close it out.

Also in the completion of a game suspended earlier, Westmont prevailed, 12-9.

Arroyo and Francisco Torres both had two hits and two RBIs for the Lions in the game that began on Feb. 11 at Vanguard.

COSTA MESA — Rachel Stalford won her fourth straight pitching decision to help the host Lions split two nonconference games with Simpson University on Wednesday.

Vanguard won the first game, 2-1, in eight innings, to back Stalford, who is now 7-6.

The Lions scored the winning run with the help of the international tiebreaker (a runner beginning the inning on second base). Kari Bergerson executed a sacrifice bunt. After a Taylor Hallahan single failed to produce the run, putting runners on the corners, Breanne Gomez lifted a sacrifice fly to left for the walk-off win.

In the second game, Simpson rallied from a 2-0 deficit to post a 3-2 victory.

Vanguard is 25-16.

Fullerton 19, Orange Coast 0

FULLERTON — Jessica Morrow had the lone hit for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game called after five innings due to the mercy rule.

OCC fell to 2-21 overall.
