State championships

SAN MATEO — Sophomore Austin Pollok finished fifth in the hammer throw to top Orange Coast College athletes competing on Friday and Saturday at San Mateo College.

Pollok’s mark was 173 feet, 3 inches.

OCC sophomore Cameron Pizzica finished eighth in the decathlon with 6,069 points. He topped the field with a pole vault of 14-5 1/4.

The Pirates’ five team points ranked 29th among 36 teams who scored at the event.

State championships

SAN MATEO — Freshman Reanna Cortez topped Orange Coast College finishers with a seventh-place showing in the 1,500 meters in the meet contested Friday and Saturday at San Mateo College.

Cortez posted a time of four minutes, 48.9 seconds.

Freshman Sabrina Howe (5 feet, 1 3/4 inches in the high jump) and sophomore Carmille Garcia (11 minutes, 52.98 seconds in the 3,000 steeplechase, both finished eighth for OCC.

Freshman Karen Silvas finished ninth in the 1,500 in 4:55.0 and just missed a top-eight scoring spot.

OCC’s four team points were 33rd among 38 teams that scored in the meet.
