Baseball: UCI’s Thurman set to cash in
Former UC Irvine pitcher Andrew Thurman, taken in the second round of last week’s Major League Baseball First-Year Player draft by the Houston Astos, told mlb.com on Friday that he agreed to terms and plans to sign a contract with the organization on Monday.
Thurman, the No. 40 overall selection, is scheduled to fly to Houston on Sunday to take a physical. He could sign Monday, then report to the Astros’ short-season single-A affiliate, the Tri-City ValleyCats.
The slot bonus for the 40th overall selection is nearly $1.4 million.
