SANTA ANA — Jennifer Martin scored in the 13th minute for the top-ranked Lions, who played host to the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday at Santa Ana College.

Jordan Davidson provided the assist for the Lions (8-1, 1-1 in conference), who bounced back from a 3-0 setback to Westmont on Tuesday.

Lauren Terry made four saves to preserve the shutout for Vanguard.

Hope International fell to 2-5-3, 0-2.

SANTA ANA — Juan Arellano scored a pair of goals and Jesus Fregoso had two assists for the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference clash on Saturday at Santa Ana College.

Arellano scored in the sixth and 28th minute with Fregoso credited with an assist each time. Nahum Paz, an Estancia High product, also picked up an assist on Arellano’s second goal.

Kelvin Fares capped the scoring for VU (5-3, 1-1 in conference), cashing in an assist by Brian Way and Andrew Sullivan in the 49th minute.

Lucca Licciardi made one save to preserve the shutout as the Lions produced a 22-9 advantage in shots.

Hope International fell to 2-7-1, 0-1-1.

MEN’S WATER POLO

USC 18, UC Irvine 1

LOS ANGELES — The No. 9-ranked Anteaters were blanked 5-0, in the first period by the top-ranked Trojans in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener for both teams on Saturday.

Mitch Wise and Jacob Mourer had three goals each for UCI (10-3, 0-1 in the MPSF).

Chase Watson, a Corona del Mar High product, had one goal for the Trojans (13-1, 1-0).

UCI plays its first home game of the season on Saturday against Pepperdine at 9:25 a.m.

Vanguard def. San Diego Christian

Jessica Neves had 20 kills and Jessica Chase added 17 kills to lead the No. 20-ranked Lions to a 25-20, 25-18, 24-26, 25-11 Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday night at the Pit.

Sarah McKinny had 11 kills and Kelly Heenan led Vanguard (13-5, 2-3 in conference) with 29 digs. Carla Cantarella amassed 30 assists and Kelly Dalrymple had 17 assists for the Lions.

San Diego Christian is 4-12, 2-3.

Hawaii def. UC Irvine

Cassidy Pickrell, Aly Squires and Arielle Manz had 11 kills each for the Anteaters, but sixth-ranked Hawaii won the Big West Conference match, 25-16, 25-17, 22-25, 25-15, Saturday in front of a sold-out crowd of 814 at Crawford Court.

Pickrell fired a match-leading three aces to lead the Anteaters to a 7-2 advantage in service winners, while Molly Yoder topped the team with nine digs. Shelley Anderson totaled 31 assists and four kills for UCI (9-8, 0-3 in conference).

Hawaii is 15-1, 4-0.
