Briefs: Hoops clinics at Ocean View

Ocean View High will hold the fourth of six free basketball clinics Monday at the school's gymnasium.

The clinics will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. over the next six Mondays through Nov. 2. Registration will be taken at 6 p.m. each Monday night prior to the start of each clinic. A parent or guardian must be present at the time of registration.

Junior high swim classes at Edison

Edison High swim and water polo head coach Diggy Riley is offering a morning training program that will begin at the school pool later this month.

The program will be similar to the high school swim program in terms of practices, technique, stroke work, starts and turns, and more. Those interested must already know how to swim. Knowing all four strokes is not a prerequisite.

Class times are tentatively set for 6:15 to 7:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Handball coming

The Simple Green U.S. Open of Handball will present the 23rd annual Naty Alvarado Handball Classic October 24-27at Los Caballeros Sports Village (17272 Newhope Street) in Fountain Valley. Athletes from around the world will compete for cash awards totaling more than $120,000.

The tournament will feature male and female athletes from the United States Handball Assn. and World Players of Handball. The Simple Green U.S. Open of Handball will be webcast live via the WPH website throughout the event at

A day of running

Edison High will stage Resolution Run, a 5K and kids' fun run, Dec. 15. The first-year event will be held at Fairview Park (2501 Placentia Avenue) in Costa Mesa.

Proceeds from the event support local youth at Edison High and The McKenna Claire Foundation, a Huntington Beach 501©3 charitable foundation supporting pediatric brain cancer research. The foundation started in honor of local seven-year old McKenna Claire who was diagnosed with a rare inoperable brain stem tumor (Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma) and passed away in July 2011. Its mission is to speed research and understanding of DIPG tumors and future treatments at Monje Lab at Stanford University.

The 5K starts at 8:30 a.m. with participant fees set at $40 per adult and $30 per students.
