The Newport Harbor High field hockey team took third place in the Los Angeles Field Hockey Assn. Tournament of Champions after winning by forfeit against Westminster Saturday.
Westminster showed up two hours late to the scheduled third-place game at Moorpark College and Newport Harbor won by forfeit because the teams could not play due to the championship game's start time, Newport Harbor Coach Amanda Boyer said.
"It was very disappointing, but the girls earned their spot to be there after the hard-fought semifinal game," Boyer said in an email.
The Sailors (20-7) lost in sudden-death overtime, 1-0, when Harvard-Westlake scored with 10 seconds left in the semifinals.
Newport Harbor's Jordan Blanchfield, Cailynn Smethurst, Alex Palmer and Mia Bagiu earned all-tournament team honors.
