College Roundup: UCI falls to Maryland


Maryland 1, UC Irvine 0

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — The visiting No. 12-seeded Anteaters matched the No. 5 Terrapins in shots, 10-10, but the hosts scored in the 32nd minute to end UCI's season in the NCAA round of 16 on Sunday.

UCI (15-5-3) made it to the round of 16 for the second time in the program's history.

Maryland (15-3-5) broke UCI's season-long scoreless streak at 380 minutes when Patrick Mullins redirected a cross into the net for his 16th goal of the season.

UCI also saw its school-record eight-game winning streak halted.


Cal 73, UC Irvine 56

BERKELEY — The visiting Anteaters shot a season-low 29.4% from the field, hitting 20 of 68 field-goal tries in the nonconference game on Monday.

Senior Chris McNealy had 13 points and six rebounds to lead the team, while freshman Like Nelson had 12 points and three assists for the Anteaters (5-4).

Cal (6-2) led, 35-19, at halftime and finished with a 50-41 rebounding advantage.

UCI plays host to Pepperdine on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Grand Canyon 82, Vanguard 73

PHOENIX — Senior guard Preston Wynne had 29 points to lead the visiting Lions in the nonconference game Tuesday.

DeAngelo Jones had 18 points while Keith Mason had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Lions (7-3).

Grand Canyon, for which former UC Irvine assistant Todd Lee is an assistant to head man and former NBA standout Dan Majerle, overcame a 38-28 halftime deficit to improve to 5-3.


Robert Morris 2, Vanguard 1

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. — The No. 6-seeded Lions erased a 1-0 deficit in the 36th minute, but surrendered the game-winner in the 79th minute to see its season end in the second round of the NAIA Tournament on Tuesday.

Veronica Aguilar scored on an assist from Liliana Ruiz to pull Vanguard (15-5-1) even. The Lions, who outshot the winners, 16-12, had two shots hit the crossbar.

Robert Morris (15-4-1) advances to the quarterfinals.

Senior two-time Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year Jordan Davidson had five shots to lead the Lions in her final collegiate game.

Ashley McCutcheon had three shots and Lauren Terry had two saves for Vanguard, which reached the quarterfinals a year ago.

Florence Dadson, who scored the game's first goal, has 30 goals this season.


Wayland Baptist def. Vanguard

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — The Lions hit .038 as a team to fall, 25-23, 25-17, 25-15, in the first of three pool-play matches Tuesday at the NAIA Tournament.

Sarah McKinny had 11 kills and hit .353 to lead the Lions (22-7), who face Spring Hill of Alabama on Wednesday as play in the four-team Pool E continues.

Wayland Baptist is 32-6.


UC Santa Barbara 13, UC Irvine 8

STOCKTON — The No. 8-seeded Anteaters lost their third straight in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament on Sunday, falling to the Gauchos in the seventh-place game at Pacific.

UCI (13-15) lost 10 of 11 contests against MPSF teams this season (regular-season and tournament games) and is 1-18 in its last 19 similar games.

Senior Mitch Wise, who received honorable mention in All-MPSF voting, had three goals Sunday to lead UCI. He also led the team with 80 goals this season and ranked third in the MPSF with a scoring average of 2.86 per game.

Wise, who scored 242 goals at UCI, is a two-time All-American. He earned third-team honors as a sophomore and junior.
