Oilers humming along

Huntington Beach High and Edison both won their first two matches in Sunset League boys’ volleyball competition, each winning on Tuesday.

Huntington, which continues at No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 rankings, defeated host Fountain Valley, 25-12, 26-28, 25-18, 25-17. Outside hitters TJ DeFalco (nine digs) and Sean Morrissey had 19 and 14 kills, respectively, for the Oilers (17-0), who ran their league match win streak to 22.

Will Thibodeau had eight kills and Brian Martinez 13 digs for the Barons (9-4), who became only the second team in 22 league matches to take a set against the Oilers.

“Our play continues to get better week to week as well our understanding of what we are trying to do and our confidence doing it,” Fountain Valley Coach Adam Cutrell said.

•Edison went to Newport Harbor and came back from a set down to topple the Sailors, 27-29, 25-22, 25-22, 25-19. Garrett White led the Chargers with 14 kills and four blocks.

“We are playing a little better each week,” Edison Coach Trent Jackson said. “We did a good job of serving, hitting our targets and our passing has improved. We could play a little better defense, picking tips, and we need to continue to cut down our unforced errors.”

•Marina on Tuesday was edged by visiting Los Alamitos, which took a 24-26, 25-17, 25-23, 25-22 victory. Outside hitter Colin McCallister had 12 kills and setter/opposite Carlos Rivera had nine kills for the Vikings (11-5).

“Our team fought hard but unfortunately, our passing in serve-receive, let us down in some crucial moments,” Marina Coach Rob Kijewski said. “The match was there for the taking, we just couldn’t seize the opportunities.”

In Sunset openers last week, Huntington swept visiting Newport Harbor (25-20, 25-17, 25-22), Edison swept Marina (25-14, 25-15, 25-10), and Los Alamitos downed Fountain Valley in five sets (25-18, 16-25, 19-25, 25-15, 17-15).

•Ocean View squared its Golden West League record at 1-1 March 27 by rallying past visiting Orange, 25-20, 27-29, 15-25, 25-21, 15-5. Tristan Wenschlag had 18 kills and 19 digs for the Seahawks.

“We showed a lot of fight being down, two games to one, and down, 12-6, in game four,” Ocean View Coach Seth Cutrell said. “I’m proud of the team for battling back. It was a good turning point in the season for us.”
