Hundreds of golden retrievers expected for Goldie Palooza in Huntington Beach

Hundreds of floppy-eared golden retrievers will converge in Huntington Beach’s Central Park on Sunday for the inaugural Goldie Palooza.

Dogs can be entered in a Halloween costume contest for a chance to win a $25 basket of dog-related items. The event also will feature a kissing booth, a pet caricature artist and various vendors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the park, 18000 Goldenwest St.

About 300 dogs are expected to show up.

The festivities are organized by SoCal Golden Retrievers Buddies, a group that meets regularly around the region.

The public is welcome to participate, though a minimum donation of $5 per dog is required. To sign up, email socalgoldenretrievers@gmail.com.

Donations will go to Southern California Golden Retriever Rescue and the Golden Retriever Club of Greater Los Angeles Rescue, according to Sophie Meagher, founder of SoCal Golden Retrievers Buddies.

Meagher, 43, of Redondo Beach, said she founded the group about a year ago to celebrate her love of golden retrievers, largely her 2-year-old, Hugo Maxwell. The group claims about 2,000 members on social media.

Meagher said Sunday’s event, commemorating the group’s first anniversary, is expected to be one of the largest gatherings of golden retrievers ever.

“I was not expecting this kind of success,” she said.
