Surfing, motocross and music will highlight Moto Beach Classic in Huntington Beach

Motorcycle designer Roland Sands has been dreaming for years of combining his passions for surfing and motocross into one event.

His aspirations will come to fruition Saturday with the Moto Beach Classic in Huntington Beach.

The day will be packed with a surfing competition, a series of motocross (off-road motorcycle) races and musical performances at Bolsa Chica State Beach. The event is expected to attract about 4,000 people.

“This is really about bringing these different cultures together and smashing them into one place,” said Sands, 42, of Long Beach.

The main race will be the final of the Super Hooligan National Championship Series, a competition established by Sands’ company, Roland Sands Design. The winner will be given a $50,000 Indian Motorcycle race bike.

Sands said a dirt flat track will be constructed in the beach parking lot for the motocross races. Eight hundred tons of dirt will be trucked onto the lot for the 110- by 300-foot course.

Concerts will be held at SeaLegs Live with rock bands Lit, Unwritten Law and Wargirl and reggae band Black Uhuru.

Sands is well-known in the motorcycle industry, having created custom bikes for celebrities Brad Pitt, Anthony Keidis and Mickey Rourke.

He grew up working on bikes with his dad, who also was in the motorcycle business, and surfing around Southern California.

With this event, he hopes not only to showcase two of his favorite activities but also to introduce people to motocross who typically wouldn’t travel to the races, which are usually held in other parts of the country and the world.

“Rather than trying to get people to the races, we are bringing the races to the people,” Sands said. “A lot of people don’t get a chance to see this type of thing. Being able to bring it close to where they live, it’s going to be a real fun environment.”

The musical element became possible when SeaLegs Live was established this year at the restaurant SeaLegs at the Beach. Sands said he’s known SeaLegs owner Alicia Whitney for years and that they had been discussing doing a project together for a while.

Sands said he hopes the event can become an annual occurrence.
