CdM, Newport Harbor earn Nos. 3 and 4 seeds in CIF-SS Division 1 boys’ volleyball playoffs

The Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor high school boys’ volleyball teams earned the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds during the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoff pairings on Friday, while the top two seeds went to defending section champion Los Angeles Loyola and Oak Park.

The Sea Kings and Sailors are two of seven local programs in the postseason. Also in the top division are Edison, Huntington Beach and Laguna Beach. Estancia made it in Division 3 and Sage Hill in Division 4.

The first round of the playoffs is on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Sea Kings’ run at a third straight section finals appearance starts at home, where they play Mission Hills Alemany (18-7). CdM (26-3) is the Pacific Coast League champion, and Alemany shared second place in the Mission League.

Sunset League champion Newport Harbor (25-3) is at home with Dana Hills (16-14), the runner-up finisher from the South Coast League. The Sailors have beaten the Dolphins twice this year, in a nonleague match at Dana Hills on March 15, and two days later in pool-play action at the Orange County Championships.

Edison (17-12) is at Sea View League champion Trabuco Hills (19-8). The Chargers, ranked No. 7 in the final Division 1 poll, split second place in the Sunset League with Huntington Beach.

The No. 8 Oilers (22-10) received the Sunset League’s No. 2 entry into the playoffs, and they get to play host to Canyon (22-9), which won the Crestview League title. Huntington Beach defeated Canyon at the Tesoro tournament on Feb. 25.

Laguna Beach (18-4) is at home against Los Angeles Cathedral (14-11), which placed second in the Del Rey League. The Breakers claimed the Orange Coast League crown.

Estancia is making its first postseason appearance since 2006. The Eagles (11-9), the third-place team from the Orange Coast League, travel to Golden West League champion Westminster (18-8).

Sage Hill (10-13) heads to Long Beach St. Anthony (18-6). Sage Hill took third in the Academy League, while the Saints won the Camino Real League.
