The Ocean View High girls’ basketball team opened its Golden West League schedule with a key 66-63 overtime win at home over defending league champion Segerstrom on Tuesday night.

Junior center Helen Reynolds had 31 points and 11 rebounds for the Seahawks (12-5, 1-0 in league).

Ocean View coach Kim Morris revealed a heart-stopping sequence of events that led to the overtime period. The Seahawks trailed by three points in the final minute of regulation. Ocean View looked for the quick two, getting the ball down to Reynolds. She missed, but freshman forward Hosanna Walker grabbed the rebound and put it back in for a three-point play.

Then, Walker forgot the score. Thinking that her team was still behind, she committed a foul, sending Segerstrom to the line with a chance to win the game in the final seconds. The Jaguars would miss the free-throw opportunity, sending the game to the extra session.

Despite the mental error, Morris lauded the freshman for making key hustle plays late in the game. Walker had 15 points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocked shots.

“[That was a] tremendous amount of pressure on a freshman to come into this league, with no familiarity for Segerstrom, to guard their best player [Tati Zazuetta], and function on offense the way that she did,” Morris said. “I’m so proud of her.”

Newport Harbor 48, Fountain Valley 32: Junior point guard Lexi Alvarez had 20 points, five rebounds and four assists for the visiting Sailors in a Sunset League game on Tuesday.

Sophomore forward Ashleigh McPhie had five points, 10 rebounds and four assists for Newport Harbor (6-8, 1-1 in league). Sophomore forward Chloe Swanson added 13 rebounds.

Fountain Valley fell to 7-12 overall and 0-2 in league.
