High school roundup: CdM girls’ basketball on brink of playoff berth

Junior center Tatiana Bruening had 29 points and 20 rebounds to lead the Corona del Mar High girls’ basketball team to a 52-40 win at Northwood in Thursday’s Pacific Coast League contest.

The Sea Kings (10-13, 5-3 in league) will await the result of tomorrow’s game between Irvine and University. A loss by the Vaqueros (7-15, 2-5) would allow CdM to clinch a CIF Southern Section Division 3AA playoff berth because the Sea Kings already swept Beckman (10-13, 2-5) this season.

CdM returns to the court for its senior night on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. against Woodbridge (15-8, 6-1).

Huntington Beach 61, Fountain Valley 22: Junior forward Bella Serrano had a team-high 16 points to lead the visiting Oilers in Thursday’s Sunset League game.

Freshman point guard Alyssa Real had 12 points, sophomore guard Shelby Schuesler added 11 points, and junior center Daniella Benabou blocked four shots.

Huntington Beach (16-8, 6-2 in league) and Edison (13-10, 6-2) are tied for second place in league. The teams face each other at Edison to end the regular season on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Edison 58, Newport Harbor 26: Senior center Ashley Niemand had 25 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Chargers in their Sunset League home game on Thursday.

Senior forward Finley Garnett added 13 points and 12 rebounds, while senior guard Hope Nguyen contributed six points, six assists and five rebounds.

Junior guard Lexi Alvarez had 17 points, eight rebounds and six steals to lead Newport Harbor (8-14, 2-6). Freshman forward Willa Rath added six points and seven rebounds.

Edison remains at home to face Aliso Niguel on Saturday.

Los Alamitos 69, Marina 13: The first-place Griffins have a two-game lead in the Sunset League over Edison and Huntington Beach with two games remaining.

Huntington Beach hosts Los Alamitos (19-5, 8-0 in league) on Monday at 7 p.m.

Calvary Chapel 47, Estancia 42: Estancia dropped Thursday’s home Orange Coast League game, falling to 8-14 overall and 3-5 in league.

With two games remaining, Estancia, Costa Mesa and Saddleback are all vying for the third playoff spot out of the league.

The second round of the Battle for the Bell will take place on Wednesday at 6 p.m., with Costa Mesa visiting Estancia in the teams’ regular-season finale.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Edison 2, Newport Harbor 1: Chloe Helenihi and Amanda Chadwick scored for the host Chargers in a Sunset League game on Thursday.

Michael Guptill had an assist for the Chargers (8-6-6, 4-3-2 in league). With a match remaining, Edison is tied for second place in league with Huntington Beach, behind league champion Los Alamitos. The Chargers conclude league play at Fountain Valley on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Alyssa Sims scored for Newport Harbor (8-10-4, 1-6-2), which plays host to Marina on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Huntington Beach 2, Fountain Valley 1: The visiting Oilers moved into a tie for second place in the Sunset League on Thursday.

Huntington Beach is 13-8-4 overall and 4-3-2 in league. The Oilers conclude league play by hosting Los Alamitos on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Fountain Valley (12-8-2, 2-6-1) hosts Edison on Tuesday.

Los Alamitos 3, Marina 0: The Vikings dropped to fourth place in the Sunset League on the road Thursday.

Marina is 15-5-4 overall and 4-4-1 in league, a point behind both Edison and Huntington Beach. The Vikings’ league finale is Tuesday at 5 p.m. at Newport Harbor.

Ocean View 1, Santa Ana 1 (Ocean View wins 4-3 on PKs): Emily Cabrera scored in regulation, assisted by Aislinn Hernandez, in the Seahawks’ Golden West League game Thursday at home.

Hernandez, Micayla Shook, Analisa Chavez and Jazmin Navarrete all scored in penalty kicks for Ocean View (4-10-4, 3-2-3 in league). Goalkeeper Savannah Davis made two penalty kick stops to help secure the win.

Ocean View hosts Westminster on Saturday at 3:15 p.m.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, The Webb School 1: Sadie Hill scored twice for the Tritons in Thursday’s San Joaquin League game at Vanguard University.

Alyssa Smith added a goal for Pacifica Christian (14-3, 6-3 in league), and Brooklyn Motske had two assists.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Laguna Beach 10, Coronado 2: Sophia Lucas and Alex Peros each scored twice for the Breakers in the second-round game of the Irvine Southern California Championships on Thursday at Foothill High.

Grace Houlahan, Molly Renner, Isabel Riches, Nicole Struss, Evan Tingler and Morgan Van Alphen also scored for Laguna Beach (17-1). Thea Walsh made 13 saves.

The Breakers also beat Long Beach Cabrillo 20-1 in a first-round game. Struss, Tingler and Van Alphen led the way with three goals each.

Laguna Beach plays at Foothill in a tournament quarterfinal game Friday at 6 p.m.

Corona del Mar 12, Carlsbad 6: The Sea Kings advanced to the Irvine Southern California Championships quarterfinals with the second-round win Thursday at Irvine High’s Woollett Aquatics Center.

CdM (18-3) also beat Esperanza 18-4 in the first round.

The Sea Kings play Orange Lutheran in the quarterfinals Friday at 6 p.m. at Woollett Aquatics Center.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Corona del Mar 4, Northwood 2: Senior Christian Marion scored twice for the host Sea Kings, who clinched a berth into the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs after Thursday’s Pacific Coast League match.

The Sea Kings (12-5-1, 5-3-0 in league) won’t win their third straight league championship. University (15-1-2, 8-0-0) clinched the outright league title with a 1-0 win at Irvine on Thursday.

CdM’s Jett Bonner and Aidan Holmes had a goal against Northwood.

The second-place Sea Kings travel to play Woodbridge at 5 p.m. on Monday.
