High school roundup: Costa Mesa boys’ volleyball wins league opener

Christian Pham had 35 assists and 12 digs, and Costa Mesa High rallied for a 22-25, 15-25, 25-19, 25-18, 15-11 victory over visiting Saddleback in an Orange Coast League boys’ volleyball opener on Thursday.

Ethan Elliott had a team-high 12 kills and six blocks for the Mustangs. Jonathan Barton added 10 kills and three blocks, Eli Elliott contributed eight kills and five blocks, Jason Chiang recorded nine kills and 10 digs, and Andrew Pham chipped in with 27 digs.

Costa Mesa (2-2, 1-0 in league) will host Laguna Beach on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Pacifica Christian Orange County 3, Samueli Academy 1: Josh Griffith had 11 kills, eight digs and three service aces to lead the Tritons to a 19-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-14 nonleague road win on Thursday.

Caleb Snyder had 12 assists and Kyle Barnard added two blocks.

Pacifica Christian (3-8) will host Downey St. Pius X-St. Matthias Academy (2-14) on Monday at 3:45 p.m.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Edison 17, Marina 5: AJ McLean had five goals and three assists for the host Chargers in a Sunset League game Thursday.

Dominic Rehak had three goals and two assists for the Chargers (5-3, 1-1 in league). Hunter Whalen made five saves.

Tyler Cox had two goals for Marina (0-5, 0-1), which got one goal each from Scott Lux, Dillon Blake and Luc Toppen. Lucas Bowen made eight saves.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Costa Mesa 101, Katella 68: Aidan Blair and Teak Zachary each won two events for the Mustangs in Thursday’s nonleague meet at home.

Blair won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.07 seconds and the 100 free in 49.43. Zachary won the 100 butterfly (1:00.61) and the 200 individual medley (2:19.83).

Augie Cunningham won the 200 free in 1:52.63, and Nick Vargo won the 500 free in 5:49.50 for Costa Mesa, which also won all three relays.

The Mustangs host Calvary Chapel on Wednesday.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Costa Mesa 116, Katella 53: Sey Currie won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events for the Mustangs in Thursday’s nonleague meet at home.

Currie touched in 27.35 seconds to win the 50 free, and 1:00.89 in the 100 free.

Other first-place finishers for Costa Mesa included Sophie Blair in the 200 individual medley (2:40.47), Hannah Reese in the 100 butterfly (1:19.50) and Ta’iuta Uiagalelei in the 100 backstroke (1:17.75).

The Mustangs, who host Calvary Chapel on Wednesday, also won all three relays.

BOYS’ GOLF

Corona del Mar 202, University 202 (CdM wins tiebreaker): With the Pacific Coast League match tied, the scores from the No. 6 golfers decided the winner, and Oscar Chang’s seven-over-par 43 won it for the Sea Kings at Irvine’s Strawberry Farms Golf Club on Thursday.

Ryan Shih earned medalist honors with a 38 for CdM (5-1, 2-0 in league). Lawrence Shih had a 40, followed by 41s by Guy Clauss and Will LeBeau, and a 42 by TJ Jenkins.

Newport Harbor 202, Fountain Valley 222: Junior Ethan Barnes was the individual medalist for the Sailors, shooting a two-under-par 34 in a Sunset League match at Big Canyon Country Club on Thursday.

Newport Harbor’s Campbell Norris finished with a 37 and Ted Terry had a 39.

Josh Vo led the Barons with a 37.
