Arcadia bids raise stakes at Laguna Beach Trophy Invitational

Share

The Laguna Beach Trophy Invitational already had a reputation for being a destination meet for distance runners.

Early risers fight for the limited parking spots and file into the stadium at Laguna Beach High to see the meet’s big draw – the Eric Hulst Invitational 3,200-meter races.

On this occasion, the Trophy Invite got another shot in the arm. Rich Gonzalez, the meet director of the nationally-acclaimed Arcadia Invitational, announced that a spot in the prestigious meet was on the line for those in the field.

Temecula Great Oak’s Gavin Korby (nine minutes, 18 seconds) and Carlos Carvajal (9:19.52) took the top two spots in the boys’ race, earning invitational heat spots for Arcadia. The No. 3-6 runners in the race qualified for the seeded 3,200.

Laguna Beach’s Ryan Smithers (19th, 9:28.43) and Sebastian Fisher (27th, 10:01.33), and Corona del Mar’s Joseph Cianfrani (26th, 9:57.18) were the locals in the boys’ race.

As for the girls, Great Oak’s Tori Gaitan (10:34.76) earned a spot in the invitational heat at Arcadia. Downey Warren’s Nadine Gomez (2nd, 11:02.39) and Santa Ana’s Maria Hernandez (3rd, 11:02.75) will be entered into the seeded heat.

Despite not claiming spots on the starting line at Arcadia, the stakes made the race immensely exciting for locals involved.

Breakers senior Evie Cant finished eighth in 11:18.11, just behind Costa Mesa sophomore Diane Molina (11:09.59), who placed sixth.

“I went into the race not expecting myself to be in the top pack, so I didn’t really put myself there,” Cant said, calling it the most competitive race she has been in. “Looking back on it, I probably should have because I probably would have been able to stay with them.”

Cant added that freshman teammate Jessie Rose (19th, 11:37.59) got invaluable experience in running the race.

“It’s incredible,” Cant said. “She’s only ever done one two-mile before that. She’s very lucky. I don’t think that she understands how fortunate she is to be in that race and how talented she is.

“She puts a lot of pressure on herself and is tough on herself. I think that’s great because it pushes her, and she’s very hard-working. It’s amazing that she’s in that race, and it will definitely help carry her confidence through all four years.”

Sage Hill standout Brooklyn Button (11:26.95) took second in her varsity 3,200 run. The senior said she was not mad about missing the Eric Hulst race.

“I think [Lightning coach Nate Miller] was expecting that I would make it to the first heat, but when I found out I was in the second, I wasn’t at all angry because there’s a different kind of motivation when you’re near the front of the pack,” Button said.

Costa Mesa twins Felicia and Tayla Crenshaw picked up where they left off as state qualifiers in their junior year. They finished first (144 feet, three inches) and second (121-9) in the discus, respectively.

“It was a lot of technique, getting stuff done, and making sure that it’s all in the right positioning so that when we get to season, I know what to do,” Felicia Crenshaw said of her offseason training. “Now that I’m in season, I’m getting ready for those big meets.

“I’m getting ready for Arcadia, CIF and league. These are all meets that are going to help me get to there and go against the best. That’s where I want to be is with the best.”

Ocean View’s Jason St. Pierre was the runner-up (9:57.25) in the boys’ Open Division 3,200.

CdM’s Cole White and Simona Bocancea placed in the top five in discus.

Estancia’s Jay Enciso took sixth in boys’ shotput with a mark of 46-11.5.

In the boys’ 800, Marina’s Luke Sutherland took fifth (1:59.65).
