Around Town: Struggling seal gets treatment after rescue by Newport animal-control officers

A young, female elephant seal is receiving care for skin and eye problems after being found on the sand in Newport Beach looking a little the worse for the wear.

In Facebook and Twitter posts accompanied by video snippets, the Newport Beach Police Department’s social media team described two animal-control officers wrestling the rather cranky 165-pound seal into a large crate and, with the help of a lifeguard, lifting it into a truck after being called out Monday to the G Street beach.

The seal, estimated to be about 3 years old, was taken to Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach. A tag on the animal showed it had stranded itself on the beach and needed help before.

The seal was nicknamed June, for the month when she last came to the Mammal Center. June is being treated for issues related to her annual molt — a normal process called a “catastrophic molt” — and one of her eyes.

Costa Mesa Library Foundation Committee donates for new city library

Members of the Costa Mesa Library Foundation Committee recently donated $26,000 to the city to help purchase needed equipment for the new city library in Lions Park.

Friends of the Costa Mesa Libraries members Charlene Ashendorf, Mary Ellen Goddard and Barbara Steck presented three checks totaling that amount to the City Council during Tuesday’s meeting.

“Thank you for investing in our community and most importantly thank you for your strong support,” Mayor Sandy Genis said. “We truly value your partnership.”

The city broke ground last summer on a $36.5-million makeover of Lions Park. The centerpiece of that effort is a new two-story, 20,000-square-foot library.

Dueling piano club to open in Costa Mesa

A dueling-piano club, Keys on Main, will celebrate its grand opening at The Triangle in Costa Mesa on Friday.

The 21-and-older venue will feature two entertainers playing pianos together on a stage. Shows can vary widely based on audience requests and include tunes from a mix of musical genres.

DUI checkpoint in Costa Mesa this weekend

The Costa Mesa Police Department will conduct a DUI and driver’s license checkpoint beginning Friday at 8 p.m. until Saturday at 2:30 a.m. at an undisclosed location in the city.

The checkpoint will be placed in an area where DUI crashes and arrests are common. Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and drug impairment and proper licensing, according to the department.

Funding for the checkpoint is provided by a grant from the Office of Traffic Safety.

H.B. race will support the Marines

A 5K run/walk will be held Saturday morning in Huntington Beach to support the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines at Camp Pendleton.

Participants will take off from the parking lot at Beach Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway at 8 a.m. A pancake breakfast put on by Huntington Beach firefighters will follow the race and is included with registration. The breakfast is also open to the public for $5 per person.

Event will celebrate ‘women creators’ at Segerstrom Center for the Arts

The Segerstrom Center for the Arts will host ¡DAMAS!, an event celebrating the creative voices of Orange County women, Saturday in the Julianne and George Argyros Plaza.

The free event will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. and include a panel discussion on creativity and innovation, spoken-word poetry performances, a mat-less yoga class, blacksmithing and other activities.

St. Patrick’s Day party for seniors scheduled in Fountain Valley

All those age 55 and older are invited to attend a St. Patrick’s Day luncheon on March 13 at the Center at Founders Village Senior and Community Center, 17967 Bushard St. in Fountain Valley.
