Pedestrian killed by vehicle in Costa Mesa

A 42-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle while crossing a street in Costa Mesa late Monday, police said.

Costa Mesa police responded to a report of a crash involving a truck towing a boat and a pedestrian at the intersection of 17th Street and southbound Newport Boulevard at about 11:40 p.m., said Sgt. Zack Hoferitza.

Officers found a man lying on the roadway, Hoferitza said. The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Orange County coroner’s officials.

Witnesses told police that the man was crossing Newport Boulevard outside a crosswalk when he was hit, Hoferitza said.

The driver of the truck remained at the scene and cooperated with police, Hoferitza said. Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected to be factors in the crash, police said.
