The California Department of Public Health releases data tracking the spread of the coronavirus in San Diego County.

About 1 out of every 3 people in the county has tested positive, 1,078,233 in total.

The case tally includes 82,640 probable cases diagnosed with an antigen test, which return results faster but may be less accurate.

Over the past week, the county has averaged 40 new cases and 0 new deaths per day.

Seven-day averages offer a more stable view of the trend than daily totals.

On Jan. 3, 2022, the state reported an exceptionally high number of new cases due to a backlog from the holiday weekend. The entire bar may not appear on this chart.

An estimated people have recovered from COVID-19 or are no longer infectious, according to a common statistical method applied by The Times. Roughly cases remain active.

Vaccines

So far, 90.1% of San Diego County residents have received at least one dose and 77.6% are fully vaccinated.

To date, 7,884,837 vaccines have been administered. Over the last seven days, an average of 743 doses per day have been given out.

State data show roughly 100% of the county’s seniors have received at least a single shot.

Hospitals and patients

There are now 656 patients admitted to county hospitals with a confirmed case of COVID-19, a change of 576.3% from two weeks ago. Of those, 52 are in an intensive care unit. More information about the strain placed on local hospitals can be found on The Times’s hospital tracker.

Nursing home totals include skilled-nursing facilities tracked by the state public health department, as well as assisted-living facilities monitored by the California Department of Social Services.

Data from other states, Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico are collected by researchers at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Systems Science and Engineering.

Counties are organized into regions using the groupings developed by the state health department.

The Times database is available to the public on Github, a popular website for hosting data and computer code. The files will be updated daily at github.com/datadesk/california-coronavirus-data.

The data collection effort is done in partnership with journalists at the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Diego Union-Tribune, KQED, KPCC, CapRadio, Calmatters and Stanford’s Big Local News.
