Keep New Year’s resolutions

Living with ongoing health conditions

The Stanford Patient Education Research Center presents a free six-week course designed to assist with learning how to live with chronic health conditions. The course covers nutrition and physical activity, communication skills, relaxation techniques, medication usage, goal setting, and problem solving. The course will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 10, 24, Feb. 7 and 14 at the Susi Q Senior Center, 380 Third St. Advance registration is required, by calling (949) 497-2441. Attendance is expected at all six sessions.

Rose Parade float excursion

The Susi Q Senior Center has teamed up with Good Times Travel to offer an excursion to Pasadena on Sunday, Jan. 2. The “Showcase of Floats” is an opportunity for see up close the detail, design and workmanship that goes into the Rose Parade floats. Comfortable walking shoes are suggested because there is considerable walking involved. Lunch on your own in Old Town Pasadena. The price is $49. The bus will depart at 6:15 a.m. directly across the street from the Festival of Arts Main Entrance. Free genealogy lecture series

Collyn Youngman will again offer a free, eight-week genealogy lecture series at the Susi Q. The series will provide all of the necessary information and instruction to assist with charting a family history. Registration should be made by calling (949) 497-2441. A one-time $5 material fee is due on the first day. The series will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7, 14, 21; Feb. 4, 11, 18, 25; and March 4.

Free hearing screenings

The Susi Q is offering free hearing screenings on the second Thursday of each month from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Cheryl Eiler, Au.D. of South Coast Hearing Specialists, will perform the hearing screenings which will consist of comprehensive pure-tone and speech audiometry. Family caregivers workshop

Janis Adams, RN, BSN, will be holding a three-session workshop on the fundamentals of caregiving for family caregivers. Topics include: what and how to communicate effectively with primary healthcare providers, safe medication reconciliation and management at home, and understanding key interventions necessary to prevent deterioration of a caregiver’s emotional and physical health among other topics. This series will run from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, 19 and 26. The cost is $30. Call (949) 497-2441 to register.

‘Authentic Happiness’ lecture

Veeder South, author of “The Path of Advanced Awareness to Conscious Relationships,” will conduct a free two-hour interactive seminar on developing “authentic happiness.” Conscious energy is the life-force energy for thinking, making decisions, guiding our actions, and interacting with others. Learn how to measure your own levels of conscious energy and how to balance them. The workshop will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18. Memoir writing workshop

Learn about the qualities of good memoir writing, read and discuss published memoirs, and write in response to a variety of prompts during this six-week workshop. Participants will have a clearer idea about their own stories and begin to discover a personal writing voice, style and purpose.
