‘Heroic’ sculpture on loan at LCAD

A life-sized sculpture is on long-term loan to Laguna College of Art & Design.

“Nureyev Heroic,” by Richard MacDonald, is now part of the campus collection. MacDonald’s work can also be seen in Dawson Cole Fine Art in Laguna Beach. In addition, his work is featured in private collections of President Bill Clinton, opera legend Luciano Pavarotti and author Dean Koontz.

“This sculpture communicates a profound and deep understanding of humanity. Richard’s art transcends language and speaks to all people,” LCAD President Jonathan Burke said in a statement. “An integral part of LCAD’s mission is to advance representational art, and we are extremely grateful that Richard MacDonald has allowed the college and greater community to be inspired daily by this exceptional sculpture.”

Also, Rich and Arianne MacDonald have donated the bronze sculpture “Sissone Atelier” to the college’s annual fundraising auction, Collector’s Choice, which will be held Saturday. The piece is valued at $3,800.

Film society showing Argentinian film

The Laguna Beach Film Society will air “Anita,” a touching and funny Argentinian film about a young woman with Down syndrome who is cut off from her family after a terrorist bombing, according to a press release.

The showing is at 7 p.m. June 21 at the South Coast Cinema, 693 Bluebird Canyon Drive.

Tickets are $15 at the door ($10 for students with IDs) and $20 for a food fest with wine at 6 p.m. at the Laguna Art Museum.

LCAD names ‘best of the best’

Six Laguna College of Art & Design students featured in the art college’s annual Student Juried Exhibition in April have been selected by the Board of the Pacific Art Foundation as the “best of the best” in their majors and received tuition scholarships, according to a news release.

The winners were junior Charity Oetgen, drawing and painting; sophomore Melissa Chen, illustration; freshman McKenzie Wensman, graphic design; sophomore Jacqueline De Leon, animation; sophomore Hai Hoang, game art; and junior Yuri Matsuara, honorable mention.

Scholarship money stems from sales proceeds at the foundation’s annual Meet the Artist event as well as personal donations by board members, according to the release.
