SILB to host Healthy Girl Festival

A film from the 2011 Sundance Film Festival will headline the Soroptimist International of Laguna Beach’s first Healthy Girl Festival on April 27 at the Festival of Arts grounds.

“Miss Representation,” an award-winning documentary written by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, examines how mainstream media contributes to underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence in America, according to a news release. The film will be shown at 10:30 a.m., followed by a question-and-answer session with Caroline Heldman, an associate professor of politics at Occidental College.

Heldman appears in the film along with Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), women in the media Devansh Patel, Rachel Maddow, Carol Jenkins and Katie Couric, actresses Geena Davis and Jane Fonda and comedian Margaret Cho.

Healthy Girl Day is a healthy living expo that will feature music by Laguna Beach High School’s girls band, Yours Truly; dancing, including Zumba instruction; healthy cooking demonstrations; and other entertainment. The festival will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 650 Laguna Canyon Road. The Lime Truck, winner of Food Network’s Season 2 of “The Great Food Truck Race,” will offer food.

“This is shaping up to be the mother-daughter event of the year in Laguna Beach,” event chairwoman Maggie Hempen said in a news release. “The SILB Healthy Girl Festival has been created to help girls recognize and explore the many resources around them to stay healthy in mind, body and spirit.”

The festival was supported by the Arbonne Charitable Foundation, the charitable arm of skin-care and makeup company Arbonne International in Irvine.
