7 new deaths reported in Orange County due to COVID-19

Eight new deaths and 107 new cases of the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 were reported Thursday by the Orange County Health Care Agency.

That brings the cumulative number of COVID-19 related deaths in the county to 165 since the pandemic began in March. The figure includes 76 skilled nursing facility residents.

There are 6,783 cases to date in the county, including 764 skilled nursing facility residents and 379 Orange County Jail inmates. The agency estimates that 2,890 of the cases have recovered.

Of the active cases, 293 of them are currently hospitalized, which matches the county’s single-day high from May 27. There are 129 cases in the intensive care unit, which is a new single-day high.

There were 1,658 tests reported given on Wednesday, the second-lowest total in the last month. To date, 144,916 people in the county have been tested for COVID-19.

Males have accounted for 51% of the cumulative cases and 57% of the cumulative deaths. Those who identify as Hispanic or Latino account for 38% of the cases, followed by whites at 18% and Asians at 8%. The race/ethnicity of 27% of the cases is unknown.

By age range, all patients who have died were:

  • 85 and up: 52
  • 75 to 84: 45
  • 65 to 74: 29
  • 55 to 64: 17
  • 45 to 54: 13
  • 35 to 44: 6
  • 34 and younger: 3

Here are the latest case counts for select cities, with numbers per 10,000 residents:

  • Santa Ana: 1,319 (39.1 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Anaheim: 1,169 (32.5 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Huntington Beach: 354 (17.4 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Irvine: 209 (7.5 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Newport Beach: 146 (16.7 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Costa Mesa: 133 (11.5 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Fountain Valley: 65 (11.5 cases per 10,000 residents)
  • Laguna Beach: 46 (19.7 cases per 10,000 residents)
