A Costa Mesa family was displaced on New Year’s Day after its home on the 3000 block of Roanoke Lane caught fire, causing flames to spread from the garage to the attic of the residence, fire officials reported Tuesday.

Costa Mesa Fire and Rescue Capt. Joe Noceti said the call came in shortly after 11:30 a.m. Friday of a structure fire already in progress. Four units responded, assisted by an ambulance and members of the department’s urban search and rescue unit.

“There was heavy smoke and fire showing from the garage of a single-story home,” Noceti said Tuesday, adding that the rapid spread of the fire caused significant damage. “We cut holes in the roof to let heat and fire out of the attic.”

Noceti said two adults and two children had escaped the burning building by the time crews arrived at the home. Noceti, who went into the building to retrieve items for the residents, reported a family cat also managed to flee to safety.

Firefighters battled the blaze for about 45 minutes before extinguishing it completely. Due to high levels of carbon monoxide from the smoke, the family was not allowed to return to the damaged residence, according to Noceti. An area Red Cross team was called in to support the victims.

The cause of the fire was still being investigated Tuesday. No information on the estimated loss of property or contents was available.

The civil lawsuit names Newport Beach resident Grace Elizabeth Coleman, the driver arrested in the Dec. 8 incident, and her parents, Newport Beach residents James and Kelli Coleman, as defendants.
