Caltrans sidewalk improvement project coming to Laguna Beach

Pre-construction staging for a sidewalk improvement project along Coast Highway in Laguna Beach is set to get underway on Tuesday, according to a news release from the California Department of Transportation.

During working hours, traffic will be down to one lane heading north on Coast Highway from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Southbound traffic will also be limited to a single lane from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The project will enhance ADA accessibility, as the plans include widening of the sidewalk and the current curb ramps and driveways are to be reconstructed. The work will take place along a stretch of road from Ruby Street to Ledroit Street.

Paving operations during the project, which is anticipated to be completed in early 2023, will occur overnight from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. More than 10 lane miles are scheduled for repavement as part of the project, per Caltrans.

There will be 83 curb ramps improved and 32 audible pedestrian crossing signals installed as part of the Caltrans work.

Caltrans put out a projected timeline for the first phase of construction. Work is scheduled to take place from Ledroit Street to San Joaquin Street from Sept. 7 to Sept. 24, from San Joaquin to Viejo Street Sept. 24 to Oct. 7, and from Viejo to Cajon Street Oct. 7 to Oct. 14. All of that work will take place on the northbound side of Coast Highway.

There will also be work done on the southbound side of Coast Highway from Crescent Bay Drive to Cliff Drive Oct. 14 to Nov. 8.
